“Creating Neighborhoods of Choice”

Pulse Articles (reprinted with permission of Downtown Danville Inc. Last month I painted a broad-brush picture of the fiscal dilemma the City faces and the projected cuts to programs that effect this community's appearance. I mentioned that this community has identified its problems, written action plans and is moving ahead to solve community problems and address community concerns. But still cuts in the money the City budgets to work on these issues must be made. Does that mean we collectively stop what we are doing, hold our breath and hope things do not slide backward too far? No. There is still plenty that we can accomplish as a community to achieve our goals while we work forward to better economic times. Lets consider a Danville not-for-profit and look at the opportunities that are available with that organization?. Renaissance Danville Incorporated. (You thought I was going to pick some other organization didn't you?) While we choose not to participate in any discussion about or recognition of the "r" word, we are aware of and feel the fiscal squeeze those realities have on our projects. This is where those "opportunities" I speak of come in. Opportunities to volunteer, of course. Maybe the best thing would be to list some of the tasks that lend themselves to volunteer help and perhaps you will see an "opportunity" that interests you. These tasks may help you to think about your personal areas of interest and see how they may benefit Renaissance. The categories reach beyond just clean-up or home repair items. As you can see by the list, there are opportunities for committee level volunteers too. If you enjoy this type of work and want to do something that makes a visible difference in your community, volunteering for Renaissance is for you. You may belong to a club or organization that is looking for a positive community project. There are volunteer tasks that lend themselves to a group effort better suited to a club or organization. Renaissance can help with as much or as little positive publicity as you desire. We typically like the positive publicity for all involved but if you or your group prefer to be more anonymous we will respect that. While we are on the topic of clubs please allow me to unabashedly pitch the Renaissance Road Show. Well, it is not really a road show but I am available to explain in some detail what Renaissance Danville in Danville is all about for your club or organization. I will do my best to explain why the Renaissance program is important to you and the City of Danville. I will answer your questions and if necessary dodge a tomato or two. My regular readers are starting to get the big picture about Renaissance, but there are many more that need to be informed before I can rest. For those of you who are interested in getting involved as a volunteer but feel a bit shy or perhaps feel you lack the experience to do some fix-up or painting. Maybe Renaissance is the place for you to get some basic fix-up training. Still in the top-secret development stages, Renaissance is planning to unveil a series of "how to" workshops to start later this spring. Details are being worked out for announcement in a few weeks. These workshops will be just the confidence builder for you to tackle that long deferred home project or for you to volunteer your newly acquired expertise. Just remember, you heard it here first. For more information or to lend a much-appreciated hand, please give me a call. Your Renaissance office phone number is 443-3095. Your Renaissance office email address is info@renaissancedanville.org. With all that in mind, please drive by and take a look at the progress on 310 Oak Street. That project is now underway. You will have a greater appreciation for the finished product if you take a look now. And remember, the objective is to sell the house to an appreciative family upon completion. Wouldn't it be great if when unveiled and painted this gorgeous late 1800s Queen Anne Style Victorian would have a waiting list of potential buyers? And best of all you could proudly say, "I helped renovate that house and made a positive difference in my community". Return to Articles
